Autistic Child Has a Meltdown Leaving the Playground: What Parents Can Do
A meltdown when leaving the playground may happen because stopping a favorite activity is difficult, the transition feels too sudden, or the child needs more time to process what is happening. Try giving a 5–10 minute warning, using a visual timer, and showing a simple sequence such as play → timer → car → home. Keep your voice calm and avoid adding repeated demands once the child is overwhelmed. Practicing the leaving routine when your child is calm can also make the real transition more familiar.
