Autistic Child Refuses Non-Preferred Tasks: How to Make Tasks More Manageable
Non-preferred tasks can be challenging for an autistic child when an activity feels difficult, lengthy, uninteresting, or overwhelming. Instead of forcing the entire task at once, identify what is making it hard and reduce the demand into achievable steps. Use a visual plan or first–then board to show what happens now and what comes next, offer limited choices when appropriate, and provide enough support to get started. Recognizing effort and gradually increasing expectations can help children approach difficult tasks with less stress and greater confidence.
