Autistic Child Runs Away From Tasks: How to Respond and Build Coping Skills
An autistic child may leave or run from a task when it feels too difficult, confusing, overwhelming, or non-preferred. First address immediate safety, then consider what the child may be trying to escape or communicate. Make the task smaller, clarify the expectation, offer appropriate support, and teach a replacement response such as requesting a break or asking for help. Once your child is calm, guide them back to a manageable part of the activity rather than immediately returning to the full demand. This can teach that breaks and help are available while gradually building confidence with challenging tasks.
