Autistic Child Screams When Told No: How to Respond
When an autistic child screams after being told “no,” they may be struggling with disappointment, flexibility, communication, or the sudden loss of something they expected. Stay calm, keep your words short, and acknowledge the feeling while maintaining the limit: “I know you’re upset. It’s not available right now.” When appropriate, offer an acceptable alternative or show when the desired activity will be available. Practice handling small limits during calm moments so accepting “no” or “not now” becomes a skill that develops gradually.
