Autistic Child Throws Things When Upset: How to Respond Safely
An autistic child may throw things when overwhelmed, frustrated, or unable to communicate what they need. Start with safety by moving dangerous or breakable objects, creating space, and staying nearby without adding more frustration. Then teach a safer replacement behavior, such as throwing a soft ball into a basket, squeezing a pillow, requesting a break, or using a communication card. Practice these alternatives when the child is calm so they have another way to express big feelings when frustration builds.
