If an autistic child won’t sit still, it may not be defiance. Sitting can feel uncomfortable, their body may need movement to stay regulated, or they may be expected to sit longer than they can currently manage. Try movement before sitting, begin with short sitting periods, and gradually increase the time. A cushion, alternative seat, visual timer, or planned movement break may also help. The goal is to support participation while respecting the child’s sensory and movement needs.
