Before You Think Your Child Isn’t Listening, Check These 5 Things
Not responding to a direction doesn’t automatically mean your child is deliberately ignoring you. First ask: Did they notice or hear me? Did they understand the words? Do they need more processing time? Is the environment overwhelming? Is the task too large or unclear? Once you identify the barrier, your response can change. You might move closer before speaking, simplify the direction, wait longer, reduce distractions, use a visual, or break the task into smaller steps. Looking for the reason behind a response gives you more useful information than simply labeling it “not listening.”
