Child Screams for Help: Teaching a Better Way to Communicate
Screaming may become a way for an autistic child to communicate when they are frustrated, overwhelmed, or don’t yet have an easier way to ask for help. Look for signs of difficulty before the screaming escalates and teach a simple help signal that matches your child’s communication abilities. This could be saying “help,” showing a card, using a sign, pointing to a picture, or using a communication device. Practice the signal during calm moments and respond consistently when your child uses it. The goal is to give them a communication method that is easier and more effective than screaming when they need support.
