How to Help an Autistic Child Cope With Unexpected Changes
Unexpected changes can be difficult when a child was relying on a familiar plan. Instead of only saying “It’s okay,” make the change concrete: explain briefly what changed, acknowledge the disappointment, point out what will stay the same, and show what will happen next. Pictures, a visual schedule, or a simple “new plan” can reduce uncertainty. For example: “The playground is closed. We’re going to the other playground, and we’ll still have our snack afterward.” Predictability does not remove every difficult feeling, but it can make change easier to understand and navigate.
