How to Help an Autistic Child Recover After a Meltdown
After a meltdown, your child may still need time for their body and nervous system to settle. Reduce non-urgent demands, lower noise and stimulation, offer familiar comforts or sensory supports, and keep your words short and reassuring. This is usually not the best time to ask what happened, expect an apology, or solve the original problem. Wait until your child is calm and able to reconnect, then talk about what happened and what might help next time. Recovery can take time, and a quiet, supportive response can make the period afterward easier.
