How to Help an Autistic Child Who Panics During Haircuts
Haircuts can feel overwhelming because of clipper noise, falling hair, touch around the head and face, unfamiliar people, or the loss of control that comes with sitting still. Prepare your child ahead of time with pictures or a short video, let them explore tools when calm, and start with very short visits if needed. Offer simple choices, allow breaks, and stop before distress becomes overwhelming. The goal is not to force a full haircut at once, but to build familiarity, trust, and tolerance gradually.
