How to Help Your Child Become More Comfortable With Nail Trimming
If nail trimming causes distress, don’t make the first goal “cut all ten nails.” Start by helping your child become comfortable with the experience itself. Let them explore the nail clippers while supervised, watch you use them, touch the closed clipper to a nail without cutting, and practice very small steps. When your child is ready, trimming even one nail can be enough for that session. Keep practice short and predictable. Avoid restraining your child simply to finish the routine when it can safely wait. If they become distressed, return to an easier step next time rather than treating the session as a failure. Gradual exposure works best when your child retains a sense of safety and control. Progress might mean tolerating the clippers nearby today—not necessarily having a nail cut.
