How to Help Your Child Who Refuses to Brush Their Hair
If hair brushing is painful or overwhelming, repeatedly insisting on completing the entire routine can make the brush itself become a signal that something unpleasant is coming. Start below your child’s current difficulty level. They might first play with a brush, choose one they prefer, brush a doll, brush your hand, or briefly touch the brush to their own hair. Gradually work toward a few gentle strokes before attempting longer brushing. Keep sessions short, practice when you’re not rushed, and stop before discomfort becomes overwhelming whenever possible. Tangled hair, scalp sensitivity, brush type, pulling, and previous painful experiences can all matter. The goal is not simply getting today’s hair brushed. You’re helping your child build enough comfort and trust to participate in the routine over time. Building a safe and positive experience for your child is an essential step for long term success.
