How to Notice When an Autistic Child Needs a Break Before They Become Overwhelmed
Some children do not recognize that they need a break until their body is already overwhelmed. Watch for changes such as increased fidgeting, covering ears, speaking less, becoming more sensitive to sound or touch, or getting frustrated more quickly. Offer calm breaks before your child has to ask, create a familiar quiet space, and use break cards or visual schedules when helpful. Over time, gently teach them to notice their own body signals and communicate when they need to pause.
