How to Offer Choices to an Autistic Child Without Overwhelming Them
Choices can give a child a sense of control, but too many options can create more stress. Start with two clear choices that are both acceptable to you, such as “blue cup or green cup?” Keep the language simple, show the choices visually when helpful, and give your child enough time to process before repeating the question. Once they choose, respect the choice whenever possible. Small, predictable choices during dressing, snacks, play, and transitions can help build communication and decision-making without turning every moment into a negotiation.
