“Good job!” is encouraging, but specific praise gives your child more information. Name the action you noticed: “You asked for help,” “You waited for your turn,” or “You put the toy down safely.” Notice small steps as well as big achievements, respond close to when the behavior happens, and keep the praise genuine. Some children enjoy enthusiastic praise while others respond better to a quieter acknowledgment, smile, high-five, or access to something meaningful. The purpose is to help your child understand which skill worked—not to make praise feel like a performance.
