How to Teach “All Done” When an Autistic Child Throws or Pushes Things Away

Throwing, dropping, or pushing something away can sometimes be a child’s way of communicating “I’m finished.” Teach an easier communication option before expecting the behavior to change. Your child might say “all done,” use an open-hand gesture, hand you a picture card, or select “all done” on AAC. Model the same response consistently, practice during calm and enjoyable activities, and acknowledge it quickly when your child uses it. The goal is not perfect speech—it is giving your child a communication method that other people can recognize and respond to.
