How to Teach an Autistic Child to Ask for a Break
A child does not have to rely on speech to ask for a break. They can use words, a gesture, a break card, sign, or AAC—whatever communication method works for them. Teach and practice the skill during calm moments before your child becomes overwhelmed. When they make a reasonable break request, responding consistently helps teach that communication works. Give the child time to regulate, then clearly show what happens after the break. The long-term goal is to help your child recognize when they need a pause and communicate that need before distress becomes much harder to manage.
