How to Teach an Autistic Child to Speak Up for Their Needs
Self-advocacy means helping a child communicate what they need, what feels wrong, when they need help, and where their boundaries are. This may happen through speech, gestures, signs, pictures, AAC, or another communication method. Practice simple messages such as “I need help,” “I need a break,” “no,” “stop,” or “I don’t understand” during calm moments. Most importantly, respond when your child communicates. When children learn that their communication is taken seriously, they gain confidence and independence.
