How to Teach Your Child to Ask for a Turn

Knowing how to ask for a turn is a skill that may need to be explicitly taught. Start with something your child really enjoys and teach one simple communication response such as “My turn,” a gesture, picture card, sign or AAC response. Then make the sequence predictable: Wait → Ask → Get a turn. Keep the first waiting period very short. When your child attempts the communication, respond quickly so they begin learning what the signal accomplishes. Visual “my turn/your turn” cards can make an abstract social rule much easier to understand. As the skill becomes familiar, practice with different toys, people and settings. The goal isn’t perfect words. It is helping your child develop a reliable way to communicate, “I want a turn.”
