How to Teach Your Child to Put On Clothes Independently
Getting dressed is actually a chain of many smaller skills. If the whole routine is difficult, don’t require your child to learn everything at once. Choose one easy clothing item first—a loose T-shirt, elastic-waist shorts, socks or another item your child can comfortably tolerate. Break the task into small steps. Demonstrate the action, use simple language and provide only as much physical assistance as your child needs. Then gradually reduce that assistance as the skill develops. Give your child enough time to attempt each step instead of immediately completing it for them. Practice when you’re not rushing out the door, so learning doesn’t become associated with pressure. Sensory comfort matters too. Clothing that is tight, scratchy, stiff or otherwise uncomfortable can make dressing considerably harder. Small dressing skills accumulate into greater independence.
