How to Teach Your Child to Stay Near You
Staying near a caregiver in public is an important safety skill—but it doesn’t have to begin in a crowded parking lot. Start practicing in a safe, low-risk environment where mistakes won’t put your child in danger. Choose one short instruction such as: “Stay near me.” “Stay with me.” Show exactly what “near” means. You might use a floor marker during practice, walk side-by-side for a few steps, or use a simple visual. Begin with a very short distance and duration. Reinforce successful practice immediately and gradually increase the challenge as your child becomes more reliable. Then practice in different safe environments before expecting the skill to generalize. Importantly, learning “stay near me” doesn’t mean eliminating necessary physical safety measures. Continue hand-holding or another appropriate safety strategy anywhere your child cannot yet reliably remain safe. Independence should increase as the skill becomes reliable—not simply because you’ve begun teaching it.
