How to Teach Your Child to Take Turns During Play

Turn-taking is easier to learn when the first turns are short, clear and motivating. Choose an activity your child enjoys and begin with turns lasting only a few seconds. Use consistent language: “My turn.” “Your turn.” Pictures, gestures or a visual turn card can make the exchange easier to understand. Model the routine and return the item quickly at first so your child learns that giving something up temporarily doesn’t mean losing it. Notice successful attempts—even very brief ones. As your child becomes comfortable, gradually make turns longer and practice with different people and activities. And remember: turn-taking and sharing aren’t exactly the same skill. A child can learn predictable back-and-forth exchanges without being expected to surrender preferred possessions whenever another child wants them.
