How to Teach Your Child to Wait Before Crossing a Street

Street safety should be taught as a repeated routine, not as a one-time explanation. A simple sequence might be: STOP → LOOK → WAIT → GO TOGETHER Practice stopping well before entering the roadway. Teach your child to look for traffic with you and wait for your clear signal before moving. Start practice in controlled, low-risk environments before working around busier traffic. Visual cues, modeling and repeated practice can make the routine more predictable. Most importantly, being able to repeat the steps does not necessarily mean a child can cross independently. Judgment about vehicle speed, distance, turning traffic, driveways and unexpected hazards develops separately. Continue direct adult supervision and whatever physical safety measures your individual child requires. The long-term goal is greater understanding and independence, but safety takes priority over independence.
