How to Teach Your Child to Wait for Their Turn

“Wait for your turn” can be difficult because waiting and whose turn it is are both abstract concepts. Make them visible. Use “MY TURN” and “YOUR TURN” cards, two objects, a timer or another simple signal. Begin with an activity your child enjoys and make the first turns extremely short. Clearly signal when their turn begins. Then give access promptly so the visual or verbal cue develops meaning. As your child becomes successful, slowly increase the length of each turn and practice with different toys, games and people. Short successful practice is usually more useful than beginning with long waits that exceed the child’s current ability.
