How to Teach Your Child to Wait in Line

Waiting in line combines several skills: understanding where to stand, knowing what you’re waiting for, tolerating a delay and managing the sensory demands of the environment. Start somewhere easy rather than teaching the skill for the first time in a crowded, noisy line. Show your child where to stand using a visual marker when helpful. Clearly show what they’re waiting for and make the first wait very short. A visual timer or countdown can make an invisible concept like “wait” more concrete. Some children also benefit from having a simple waiting activity—a fidget, small object, book or observation game. Gradually increase waiting time as your child succeeds.
