How to Use a First-Then Board With an Autistic Child

A first-then board makes a sequence easier to see: first one activity happens, then the next one follows. Start with only two steps and use pictures, objects, or simple words your child understands. For example, “First brush teeth, then cars” or “First backpack on, then tablet.” Show the visual calmly, help your child complete the first step, and follow through with the second step as promised. First-then works best as a predictable support—not as a threat—and can be especially helpful during routines, transitions, and less-preferred tasks.
