Playground Meltdowns: How to Help an Autistic Child Leave Without a Battle
Leaving the playground can be especially hard for many autistic child who is deeply engaged in play, overwhelmed, or needs more time to adjust to a transition. Instead of ending play suddenly, give a clear 5β10 minute warning, use a timer or visual reminder, and calmly show what happens next: play β timeβs up β go home. Offer a small choice when possible and keep your words short and predictable. Practicing the same leaving routine when your child is calm can make future playground transitions feel more familiar, manageable, and less stressful.
