When Waiting Leads to Hitting: Helping Your Child Learn to Wait
“Just wait a minute” may sound simple, but for some kids with autism, waiting without knowing how long it will last can be confusing and frustrating. Instead of expecting patience to develop on its own, parents can teach waiting as a skill through short, achievable practice, visual countdowns, and clear turn-taking routines. When children understand what they're waiting for, how long they need to wait, and what they can do in the meantime, they have more opportunities to communicate their needs without hitting.
