When Your Child Gets Upset When Plans Change | How to Help Your Child Build Flexibility
Unexpected changes can be difficult for an autistic child who relies on routine and predictability to understand what will happen next. When plans change, acknowledge the disappointment instead of dismissing it, clearly explain what changed, and show the new plan with simple words, pictures, or a visual schedule. It can also help to point out what is staying the same and give your child time to process before expecting them to move on. Practicing small, supported changes over time can help children tolerate uncertainty, understand new plans, and gradually develop greater flexibility.
