When Your Child Refuses to Get Dressed
Getting dressed can become difficult for reasons that aren’t obvious from the outside. Tags, seams, waistbands, collars, temperature, fabric texture, tight clothing, or even having too many choices may make the routine uncomfortable or overwhelming. Before treating refusal as a behavior problem, investigate what your child may be trying to avoid. Try softer or familiar clothing, remove irritating tags when possible, offer only two choices, and allow extra time so dressing doesn’t become rushed. If a particular item consistently causes distress, pay attention to that pattern. Changing the clothing or environment may be more effective than repeatedly insisting that your child tolerate discomfort.
