When Your Child Throws Things When Upset | How to Respond and Teach Safe Skills
Throwing can happen when an autistic child is overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious, overstimulated, or unable to communicate what they need. In the moment, focus first on safety by moving dangerous or breakable objects away, reducing stimulation, and using only a few calm words. Once your child is regulated, teach an alternative that serves the same need: asking for a break, using a communication card or device, squeezing a safe item, or saying βall done.β Practicing replacement skills during calm moments gives your child safer ways to communicate and manage intense feelings before throwing becomes the easiest response.
