Why an Autistic Child Says No to Everything and How Parents Can Respond
Frequent “no” responses from an autistic child aren’t always simple defiance. Everyday requests may feel overwhelming, unclear, unpredictable, or like a loss of control. Reduce unnecessary demands, get your child’s attention before giving an instruction, keep requests short and clear, and allow enough processing time for a response. When appropriate, offer two acceptable choices rather than an open-ended demand. Clear expectations and meaningful choices can reduce power struggles while helping your child participate more confidently in everyday routines.
