Why Are Transitions So Hard for My Autistic Child and How You Can Help
Transitions can be difficult when a child must stop a preferred activity, does not know what will happen next, needs more time to adjust, or is already dealing with sensory stress. Give advance warning, show the next step with a first-then board or visual schedule, and keep the routine as consistent as possible. A familiar transition object, simple job, or small choice can also make the change easier. Progress may be gradual, but predictable transitions can help reduce uncertainty and build confidence.
