Why Autistic Children Repeat the Same Question and How to Respond
An autistic child may ask the same question repeatedly even after receiving an answer. Repetitive questions can be connected to anxiety, uncertainty, processing time, a need for reassurance, or wanting predictable information about what happens next. Instead of repeatedly giving longer explanations or becoming frustrated, give one clear and consistent answer and make the information visible when possible. A visual schedule, written plan, clock, or timer gives your child something they can check independently. Over time, calmly redirecting them back to the same visual can reduce uncertainty while helping build confidence and independence.
