Why Can’t My Autistic Child Find the Words When They’re Upset?
Some autistic children can communicate well when calm but have much less access to speech when stressed, anxious, overloaded, or emotionally overwhelmed. They may use fewer words, repeat phrases, rely on gestures or AAC, need much longer to answer, or become quiet altogether. Reduce questions, give time and space, offer visual or alternative communication, and stay connected without demanding an immediate response. Once the child is calm, you can talk about what happened and what support may help next time.
