Why Choosing Between Two Things Can Be Hard
Giving two choices may seem simple, but choosing still requires several skills. Your child has to understand both options, compare them, predict what each choice means, let go of the option they don’t choose, and communicate a decision. Pressure can make that process even harder. When your child gets stuck, avoid repeatedly asking, “Which one?” Instead, keep the choices limited, show the options visually when helpful, allow quiet processing time, and reassure them that either choice is okay. The goal shouldn’t be a faster answer. It’s helping your child gradually develop decision-making skills with less pressure and more confidence.
