Why Does My Autistic Child Bite Others and What Can I Do?
Biting can happen because of intense emotions, communication difficulty, sensory needs, frustration, or feeling out of control. Respond to the immediate safety issue first: calmly block the bite when possible, create space, and avoid a long lecture in the moment. Then look for patterns—what happened just before the bite, what your child may have needed, and whether sensory input was involved. During calm times, teach safer alternatives such as asking for help, requesting a break, using a chew-safe sensory tool, squeezing something appropriate, or communicating “all done.” Understanding the reason helps you teach an alternative that meets the same need more safely.
