Why Does My Autistic Child Get So Focused That It’s Hard to Switch Activities?

Some autistic children can become deeply absorbed in an interest, activity, thought, or sensory experience. This intense focus can be a strength, but shifting attention suddenly may feel difficult or even distressing. Give advance notice before a change, show what comes next, allow transition time, and connect with the child’s current interest before asking them to switch. When possible, let them know they can return to the preferred activity later. Supporting the transition works better than treating deep focus as stubbornness.
