Why Does My Autistic Child Get So Upset When Plans Change?
Unexpected changes can feel confusing or unsafe when a child relies on routines and knowing what comes next. Give a heads-up whenever possible, explain the new plan with short language or pictures, and keep something familiar in the routine. Limited choices can also restore some sense of control. Flexibility develops gradually; the goal is not to stop disappointment, but to help your child understand the change and move through it with more support.
