Why Does My Autistic Child Get So Upset When Someone Touches Their Things?
A favorite object can feel important, comforting, predictable, or strongly connected to a child’s sense of ownership and safety. When someone touches it without permission, the child may experience the moment as a loss of control rather than a small social problem. Respect important belongings, teach simple phrases such as “ask first,” “my turn,” or “please don’t touch,” and help siblings or peers understand the boundary. Sharing can be practiced gradually, but children do not need to share every valued item.
