Why Does My Autistic Child Have Such Big Emotional Reactions?
Autistic children can experience frustration, anxiety, sadness, excitement, overwhelm, shame, and other emotions very intensely. A big reaction is not necessarily a choice or an attempt to be difficult. Sensory overload, unexpected change, communication difficulty, fatigue, or not yet having the skills to identify and manage emotions can all contribute. Validate the feeling, stay calm, reduce triggers when possible, use short and clear language, and practice coping strategies during calmer moments.
