Hitting can be communication when a child is overwhelmed, frustrated, unable to express a need, struggling with an unexpected change, or seeking a reaction or sense of control. Keep everyone safe first: block the hit if needed, create space, and use a calm, simple response. Once your child is regulated, teach safer ways to communicate the same need, such as “help,” “break,” “I’m mad,” moving away, squeezing a safe item, or using AAC or visual supports.
