Why Does My Autistic Child Keep Opening Doors, Drawers, and Cabinets?
Repeatedly opening drawers, doors, or cabinets may come from curiosity, sensory enjoyment, practicing independence, or wanting more control over the environment. Instead of relying only on βno,β create safe places where exploration is allowed and secure genuinely dangerous areas. Use simple visual labels such as βyesβ and βnot for now,β and offer safe containers, boxes, lids, or sensory bins to explore. Changing the environment can often work better than repeatedly correcting natural curiosity.
