Why Does My Autistic Child Know What to Do but Still Not Do It?
Knowing how to do something and being able to start, organize, remember, switch attention, manage time, and finish are different skills. Executive-function differences can make a child appear unmotivated even when they understand the task. Help by showing the first step, breaking larger tasks into smaller parts, using checklists or visual reminders, reducing distractions, and providing support to get started. As confidence grows, gradually reduce the help so independence can build.
