Why Does My Autistic Child Need to Control Everything?
A strong need for control can sometimes be a way of creating safety and predictability. Unexpected changes, sensory stress, uncertainty, or feeling rushed can make everyday situations feel harder to manage. Offer meaningful choices, give advance notice before changes, involve your child in plans when possible, and allow extra processing time. The goal is not to let the child control everything, but to give them appropriate autonomy while gradually building flexibility and confidence.
