Why Does My Autistic Child Prefer to Play Alone?

Playing alone is not automatically a problem. Some autistic children find solo play calmer, more predictable, or less demanding than group play, and they may have interests or play styles that differ from other children. Connection can be built without forcing social interaction. Start by joining what your child already enjoys, play beside them, follow their lead, and introduce small social opportunities with one familiar person at a time. Shared play may begin with only a few seconds of interaction—and that still counts. The goal is to expand opportunities for connection while respecting the child’s comfort, interests, and natural way of playing.
