Why Does My Autistic Child Push Other Kids and What Can I Do?

Pushing can happen for many reasons: frustration, sensory overload, difficulty communicating, wanting an item, needing personal space, or not yet understanding turn-taking and social boundaries. Start with safety—calmly separate the children and reduce the immediate demand or trigger. Later, when your child is regulated, teach an alternative such as “my turn,” “help,” “break,” “move please,” or using a picture or gesture. Look for patterns around when the pushing happens so you can support the need behind it while continuing to teach safe hands.
