Why Does My Autistic Child Refuse to Take a Shower?
Showers can involve many difficult sensations at once: loud water, changing temperature, water hitting the skin or face, strong smells, and an abrupt transition away from another activity. Make the routine more predictable with a visual sequence, consistent timing, and warnings before shower time. Adjust the water pressure or temperature, offer small choices, and begin with short exposure if a full shower feels overwhelming. Building comfort gradually is often more effective than pushing through intense distress.
