Why Does My Autistic Child Seem Fine at School but Struggle Later?

Some autistic children learn to hide or suppress differences in order to fit in. They may copy peers, hold back stimming, rehearse responses, force eye contact, or work very hard to appear calm and compliant. This can take significant effort and may be followed by exhaustion, withdrawal, irritability, or stronger reactions after school or social situations. Create spaces where your child can relax and be themselves, reduce unnecessary pressure to perform socially, and pay attention to changes in energy and mood even when they appear to be coping.
